Poultry product prices are witnessing a noticeable increase, with the price of a kilogram of chicken reaching between 19,000 and 20,000 Syrian Pounds, and eggs reaching around 40,000 Syrian Pounds.
This rise is attributed to the increase in the US dollar exchange rate against the Syrian Pound, which has led to higher rearing costs, one of the main contributing factors. Additionally, the market conditions in the previous period caused many breeders to exit production due to losses, reducing supply relative to demand.
While government measures, particularly the ban on importing chicken products, helped stop the price collapse seen earlier, their effect appears limited due to higher prices in neighboring countries compared to the domestic market.
From the breeders’ perspective, Mr. Shaaban Mahfoud, Chairman of the Poultry Breeders Committee in Tartous Governorate, described the situation as comfortable for all parties (poultry breeders, poultry product traders, and feed merchants) because costs are reasonable and product sale prices are acceptable. The only outlier needing regulation, he noted, is slaughterhouses, whose profits exceed those of the producers.
Regarding the relatively higher rise in egg prices compared to chicken, Mahfoud said, “It is temporary,” expecting them to decrease again. He attributed this to some breeders focusing on egg production, as well as on parent stock, which helped stabilize the chick market, preventing prices from reaching $1.50 due to the availability of parent stock.
On the availability of feed in the market, Mahfoud stated that it is accessible at prices close to those in neighboring countries, thanks to opening import opportunities for anyone interested. The contribution of the General Feed Corporation in this regard is limited.
Mahfoud concluded by noting that the overall outlook is promising. He emphasized that the sector, which provides livelihoods for many Syrians and offers various poultry products to all Syrians, is on the verge of recovery. He linked this to the provision of security and safety factors, which are the foundation of all work and production, recalling the well-known saying among businesspeople: “Give me a step of safety, and I will give you steps of work.”
