U.S. poultry production

An extension economist with Texas A&M University says U.S. poultry production ended 2025 on a strong note.
David Anderson tells Brownfield that two key categories were up in December compared to 2024.

“Broilers for December were actually up about 4% as well, and turkey production was up 8.4% in December.” He says, “So, we really see some more turkey production responding to some profitable prices.”
He says the price outlook for chicken producers is more uncertain.
“We went from some very high prices to now some very low prices in the wholesale market.” He says, “The combination of those low prices at wholesale, combined with some low feed costs, I think will be an interesting mix on how much we continue to expand chicken production.”
Anderson says the continued impact of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) is another wild card in poultry production.
“It’s a big part of really restraining turkey production this year.” He says, “We had a large number of outbreaks in turkey production leading up to Thanksgiving, and I think it just tells us that HPAI is with us to stay.”
He says for the year, 3.5 percent more broiler meat was produced than in 2024, while turkey production was down about 122 million pounds.
