Rising Feed Prices Crisis: Challenges and Sustainable Solutions for the Poultry Sector in the Arab World

azmat asaar copy

The poultry sector in the Arab world is facing unprecedented pressure due to a severe shortage of corn and soybean meal, two essential feed ingredients. This shortage has disrupted production stability on farms and forced many producers to reduce flock sizes or cut overall production in order to limit financial losses. As a result, the supply of eggs and poultry meat has declined, pushing prices to record highs across the region.

Some poultry farmers have resorted to importing feed by land from neighboring countries, but this option significantly increases production costs. In certain markets, the price of a tray of eggs has risen sharply, placing an additional burden on consumers and creating a difficult balance between limited supply and growing demand.

One practical and effective response to the crisis is the adoption of the deep litter system. This method uses layers of organic materials such as wood shavings or straw, which gradually develop into a warm, biologically active environment rich in beneficial microorganisms. The system improves digestion, reduces heat stress, strengthens natural immunity, lowers mortality rates, and reduces the need for frequent litter replacement. It also improves air quality by reducing odors and ammonia emissions.

The crisis has also influenced consumer behavior. Many households are reducing egg consumption, purchasing smaller quantities, or turning to home-based production, particularly in rural areas.

Although the feed crisis has exposed the fragility of regional supply chains, it has also highlighted opportunities to adopt more sustainable farming practices. Cooperation among producers, private companies, and governments is essential to ensure stable production, affordable prices, and long-term food security.
