The Lebanese Poultry Syndicate, headed by William Boutros, issued a statement reassuring consumers that chicken meat and eggs are available in large quantities across Lebanese markets, significantly exceeding local consumption needs. This surplus has driven prices down to levels that are now below production costs.
The Syndicate emphasized that concerns regarding the closure of the Bab el-Mandeb Strait and the recent military developments that emerged since yesterday evening will not affect the continuity of feed supplies and other essential materials required by the poultry sector.
However, it highlighted the severe difficulties facing egg producers, as well as the challenges encountered by poultry farmers and chicken producers due to the sharp decline in market prices.
According to the Syndicate, a carton containing 12 trays of eggs is currently sold for approximately USD 25, meaning that the price of a single egg tray is around USD 2 or less.
The Syndicate warned that this situation represents an additional crisis for the poultry sector and called on the relevant authorities to take urgent measures to protect farmers and producers from what it described as an inevitable disaster. It reiterated several emergency actions it has previously advocated, including:
• Opening export markets for Lebanese poultry products, particularly eggs.
• Temporarily suspending imports of chicken and poultry products during this exceptional period in order to support local production.
The Syndicate also encouraged Lebanese consumers to take advantage of the current low prices of chicken and eggs and increase their consumption of these essential food products. It stated that doing so would support local producers and help reduce the losses currently being borne by the sector.
