Interest in chicken coops is rising among Americans seeking a more affordable way to get eggs.

More people are searching for do-it-yourself chicken coops and buying them from retailers, recent reports and search trends show.
Research by Australia-based Eden Emerald Buyers Agent found searches for "easy DIY chicken coop plans" on Pinterest jumped 212% in the U.S. during the first three months of 2025. Searches for "backyard chicken coop plans" rose 81%, while "chicken coop run" and "chicken coop décor" increased by 163% and 108%, respectively.
Josh Roth, chief buyers agent at Eden Emerald, told Fox News Digital this trend means chicken coops will soon be common in many American backyards.
A Tractor Supply Co. spokesperson confirmed the rise in chicken coop and chick sales. “We’ve consistently sold more than 10 million baby chicks annually and expect that to increase,” they said. Poultry shoppers have grown by more than 50% over five years.
KEEP THE EGGS BUT REPLACE 5 BAD-FOR-YOU BREAKFAST FOODS, SAYS NUTRITIONIST
Kate Murphy, animal caretaker at Hoyt Farm Town Park in Long Island, NY, advises those interested in raising chickens. Fresh backyard eggs can save money and provide nutritious eggs without added steroids. Plus, it encourages family participation in a rewarding outdoor activity.
However, Murphy warns there are many factors to consider before starting. Chickens “need love” after egg-laying, and many people end up needing to re-home retired hens or dealing with unexpected roosters.
DOES THE COLOR OF AN EGG'S YOLK MEAN ANYTHING?
Only hens lay eggs, but it’s hard to tell an egg’s or chick’s gender until weeks old. For those wanting hens specifically for eggs, Murphy recommends researching and buying from reputable backyard breeders who specialize in egg-laying breeds and can provide sexed hens.
